PERSONAL ACCIDENT
What does personal accident pay for?
In a real claim: A customer who fractured his leg skiing asked whether personal accident would pay. It would not, there was no permanent outcome. All medical costs were covered under Section 1.
Personal accident pays a fixed lump sum if you suffer one of four specific outcomes as a direct result of an accident. Those are death, permanent loss of a limb, permanent loss of sight, or permanent total disablement.
Permanent total disablement means being unable to do any work at all, not just the job you did before. There must also be no prospect of recovery. An independent medical specialist needs to confirm this within 12 months of the accident.
It doesn’t cover illness, injuries that heal, or conditions that build up over time.
